The Colònia de Sant Pere is on the coast and has a
population of just over 300. There is a wide stretch of coastline, and
with the Artà mountains forming a beautiful backdrop, the whole
area opens on to the Bay of Alcúdia. The scenery here is magnificent
and has been praised by writers such as Priest Rafel Ginard.
Sa Colònia grew gradually from a farming settlement
founded at the end of the 19th century on plans made by the surveyor Antoni
Bisquerra. Today it is a quiet residential community with some tourism,
far from the madding crowds of most tourist resorts on the island.

The first families who settled in Sa Colònia
built a little oratory dedicated to St Peter, and the new church was consecrated
in 1951. Despite the dedication to this Saint, fishing never became commercially
viable, and the old wharf, dating from the fifties, has been replaced
by a yachting marina. Tourism increased in the sixties, and in summer
the population rises dramatically, but the place never loses the atmosphere
and rhythms of the old summer resorts of the past.
